Description
Geneticists from various departments compose the program in Doctor of Philosophy degree in Genetics. The areas of study covered by the program range from molecular genetics, to population and evolutionary genetics. Students can do pure or applied research on organisms ranging from bacteria and viruses to humans. They can investigate how genes are inherited, how they control cell functions and embryonic development, how they evolve, or almost any other problem in genetics. Admission requirements include: completion of bachelor's degree with one year of biology, courses in genetics, ecology, physiology and developmental biology, chemistry through organic, mathematics through integral calculus, introductory physics, and statistics. In addition to materials required by the Graduate College, applicants are required to furnish the program with completed Committee on Genetics application forms, GRE general and subject test scores, and three letters of recommendation from persons qualified to evaluate the applicant's scholarly potential. The deadline for receipt of application forms for fall admission is the first Friday in January. Due to funding constraints, we generally do not admit students for the Spring semester. Courses are available in a number of departments depending on the interests of the students.
