Graduate College and Confluence: Center for Creative Inquiry Graduate Fellowships in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

The 1885 Society Graduate Fellowships in Fine Arts and Humanities
The UA Excellence Graduate Fellowships in the Social Sciences

(fellowships for graduate students in the Colleges of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social and Behavioral Sciences and GIDP programs of American Indian Studies and Second Language Acquisition and Teaching)

With funding from the Office of the President and the UA Foundation, the Graduate College and Confluence: Center for Creative Inquiry partnered to bring these exclusive fellowships for graduate students in the arts, humanties, and social sciences. They are among the most competitive of their kind in support and prestige, and bring to the University of Arizona a world-class group of graduate scholars. These fellows will be recognized for their potential to transform scholarship and creativity and distinguish themselves within their fields.

Fellowships will be awarded to two select groups: incoming (first-year) students and those in the final year of their studies. The fellowships will therefore promote recruitment of students with the highest potential as well as support and launch top-performing students who are completing the dissertation/final project and who are poised to make a significant impact in their field.

Annual support totaling $150,000 each for the 1885 Society Fellows and the UA Excellence Fellows programs is available, covering first-year and final-year groups within each program. Each program will have a separate competition. There will be one competition each per year. Fellowships will be awarded in the Spring semester each year, so that the award process aligns with annual recruiting and funding decisions. Each award will be effective in the immediately following academic year.

Award details

The first-year fellowships will consist of an annual cash award of $25,000; the final year fellowships will be an annual cash award of up to $20,000. In addition, there will be a full base graduate tuition scholarship from the Graduate College for the award period: fall and spring semesters of the award year. The total number of awards in each category will depend on the quality of the applicants, although there will be a mix of first-year and final-year awards.

Since these awards are meant to free students from teaching or other types of work, a recipient of this award may not hold some other position for which work is required.
